Who will protect the music?
The author of the article “The Age of Electronic Music” believes that the music for acoustic instruments, the highest achievement of which he considers symphonic music, is in the past. The future belongs to electronic music, which he asks not to be confused with “pop music”, in which electronic instruments are used “primitively”. He calls such music applied music and considers it unworthy – this is simply “low-grade pseudo-electronic opuses.” A lot of words were told to them about the “poverty of colors” even of a symphony orchestra, whose “color arsenal” “does not exceed two dozen timbres” (the counting accuracy is amazing!). A. Enfi considers timbre “the most important formative function” and believes that “timbre deficit limits the compositional possibilities of academic symphony. Continue reading
Why all the same noise music?
This article will discuss not so much about noise, as you might think, after reading the title, but about the music played by the musicians and the musicians themselves. The author sketched a kind of classification of people writing electronic music. Obviously, this article could be supplemented, and recall a few more types. It is also obvious that the author’s opinion is subjective, and you don’t need to take this classification as a reference tool, but you can learn something.
Inspiration, magnetic tape rings scattered everywhere, endless doubts that it is better – this or that, something average or something completely different, this way or that – the stimulating mechanisms of the creators of noise music are as vague and ambiguous as it is. Continue reading
Sympho-electronic music
Electronic music is music whose creation uses electronic musical instruments and technology. Electronic music consists of sounds that are formed using electronic technologies and electromechanical musical instruments. Examples of electromechanical musical instruments are the Tellarmonium, the Hammond organ and the electric guitar. Pure electronic sound is obtained using such instruments as a theremin, a synthesizer and a computer.
Electronic music was previously associated only with Western academic music, but in the late 60s affordable electronic synthesizers appeared. Due to its moderate cost, they are now available to the general public, and not just to major recording studios, as it was before. This event dramatically changed the image of popular music – many rock and pop artists began to use synthesizers. Today, electronic music includes a large number of different styles from experimental academic music to popular electronic dance music. Continue reading
